Best time to trade gold (XAUUSD): hours by time zone

Updated November 3, 2026

The best time to trade gold is when London and New York are both open, especially 8 to 11 a.m. New York time, when US data comes out at 8:30. We measured gold futures from August to November 2026: in those hours gold's average 1-hour range was $27 to $29, about twice the $13 to $16 of the London morning. In India that overlap runs from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. from November to March, and 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. from March to November; the table below has it for your time zone. The quietest hours are around the daily break at 5 p.m. New York time.

When gold moves: the hourly data

Most advice on gold's best hours repeats the same session map. We measured it instead: the high-to-low range of every hourly gold futures candle on weekdays from 3 August to 3 November 2026, averaged by hour of the day in New York time.

  • 8 to 11 a.m. New York is the busiest stretch: $27 to $29 an hour on average, with the most volume. London and New York are both open, and US data lands at 8:30.
  • The hours after Tokyo and Shanghai open are the second burst, peaking at $24 an hour.
  • The London morning, 2 to 7 a.m. New York, is steady at $13 to $16 an hour.
  • After 12 p.m. New York the range drops back to $14 to $17, and 4 p.m. is the quietest trading hour at about $10.
  • From 5 to 6 p.m. gold futures do not trade at all: it is CME's daily break.
Column chart of gold futures' average 1-hour range by New York hour, 3 August to 3 November 2026: highest at 8 to 11 a.m. ($29 at 8 a.m.), a second peak of $24 at 9 p.m. when Asia opens, lowest around $10 at 4 p.m., and no trading during the 5 p.m. daily break.

A bigger range is both the opportunity and the danger. In the busy hours a setup can reach its target in one candle, and a stop placed too close gets taken out just as fast.

The best time to trade gold in India, Pakistan, the UAE and other time zones

The busy window is anchored to New York: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. there. Here it is in local time. The US changes its clocks on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so the window moves by an hour twice a year for anyone outside the US.

US data at 8:30 a.m. New York comes half an hour into the window: 7:00 p.m. in India and 6:30 p.m. in Karachi from November to March. The UK changes its clocks two to three weeks apart from the US, so for those few weeks the window starts at 12:00 in London.

The best time to trade gold in the Asian session

If the overlap falls late at night where you live, the best stretch of the Asian session is the first few hours after Tokyo and Shanghai open, from 00:00 to 03:00 UTC. That is 5:30 to 8:30 a.m. in India, 5 to 8 a.m. in Karachi, 4 to 7 a.m. in Dubai, 7 to 10 a.m. in Jakarta and 8 to 11 a.m. in Manila, all year round. In our data it was the second-busiest part of the day, before gold settles into the calmer London morning.

A rested trader in the Asian session will usually do better than a tired one at 11 p.m. Pick the window you can trade with a clear head.

Key times for gold every trading day

All times New York time, Sunday evening to Friday afternoon:

  • 6 p.m.: gold futures reopen after the daily break. Spreads are often wide in the first hour.
  • 8 to 11 p.m. in summer, 7 to 10 p.m. in winter: Tokyo and Shanghai open.
  • 3 a.m.: London opens.
  • 5:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.: the LBMA Gold Price auctions in London, at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. London time.
  • 8:30 a.m.: US data such as inflation (CPI) and the jobs report.
  • 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.: London and New York are both open, the busiest window.
  • 2 p.m. on Federal Reserve decision days: the FOMC statement, with the press conference at 2:30.
  • 5 to 6 p.m.: CME's daily break for gold futures. Many brokers pause XAUUSD or widen spreads around the same time.

When not to trade gold

  • Around the daily break, roughly 4 to 7 p.m. New York, when ranges are smallest and spreads are widest.
  • In the first seconds after a big US release without a plan. Price can jump through your stop before the order fills.
  • Late on Friday and before holidays, when fewer traders are in the market.
  • When you are exhausted. A tired trader in the best hour still makes the worst decisions.

What gold's busiest hours look like

On 30 October, gold futures fell from $3,963.60 at 9 a.m. New York time to $3,900.90 by 10:15 a.m., about $63 in 75 minutes, on around five times the volume of the early morning. That is the busy window at work.

Wick's analysis of the chart above.

Wick saw a bearish rectangle below both falling EMAs and leaned 58% bearish with 78% confidence. The plan: wait for a 15-minute close below $3,900, short a failed retest, stop above $3,907, target $3,888. The bullish case needed a break above $3,920, aiming for $3,932.

Look at the size of that stop: $7, in a window where gold's average hour covers $27 to $29. That is the trade-off of the busy hours. Setups play out fast, and a tight stop calls for a small position: risking $200 on a $7 stop is 0.28 lots, since 200 ÷ 700 is 0.286, rounded down.

Have the plan ready before 8 a.m.

Screenshot gold half an hour before the window opens and upload it to Wick. You will have the levels, both scenarios and the trigger before the first big candle, instead of reacting to it.

How to trade gold's best hours

  1. Check the calendar for 8:30 a.m. releases and Fed days. Our gold ChatGPT prompts include one that lists them in your time zone.
  2. Thirty minutes before the window, screenshot the timeframe you trade and get Wick's read: the levels, the odds on each side and the trigger.
  3. Size the trade from the stop with the XAUUSD lot size calculator.
  4. Let the trigger decide. No close beyond the level, no trade.
  5. Stop by 12 p.m. New York unless your setup is still running. After that, gold's hourly range drops back to around $15.

Trade gold's best hours with a plan

The busiest hours pay the traders who arrive prepared and punish the ones who improvise. Open XAUUSD or gold futures before the window, take a screenshot and upload it to Wick. In seconds you know where gold is likely to react, which side the odds favor and the exact close that turns the idea into a trade. Download Wick and be ready before the move, not after it.
